Welcome to the Shadowlands Refuge of the Lion Clan!
"Its lips are torn and bloodied, its flesh lies rotting at the bottom of the sea. Yet he is still my Emperor, and I hear his voice foaming up from the depths of the Pit, echoed in this eternal cup of bone...Where he commands, I have no choice but to follow." From "Fu Leng's Skull"

  Ryan Speaks on HE Problems
Ryan has written a very nice, detailed explanation of the HE problems here. I would suggest everyone read this, as it has some great explanations on card layout, rarities, packing processes, etc... It also shows that FRPG is listening to consumer feedback and improving their product as necessary. P.S., Ryan also gives a good overview on FRPG's story evolution policies here.

  I Got My HE3
I got my HE3 tonight. I took Ryan's advice to buy from multiple boxes to try and not suffer as much from the poor sorting in HE1-3. I bought my 30 packs as 15 from two different combo boxes, and I'm still two cards short of a set (Ascension of the Mantis and Monestary), the same results as HE2 buying all from one box. Every card in the dynasty half of both my starters (from the same box, I'll bet) was miscut 75/25 or worse. Not only that, but I pulled an exp2 Ginawa and a Hiruma Dojo as a U/R in two HE3 boosters? I expected the sorting problems, but the others are just insult to injury.

HE3 as a set, though, is great. It's kind of hard to write about the good things right now, since I am very irritated about the continued problems with HE. There is a lot of really great art. I'm very jealous of the Monks who all look great! Kuni Yori is actually scary to look at-- I don't think I'll ever use him, just because he is very unsettling [art is by Anson Maddocks, BTW]. If the Dragons have redeemed themselves at GenCon, from looking at Kazaq and Kokujin, I'd say they have a loooong way to go. Hoshi Maseru is probably my favorite piece of art in HE3.

HE3 brings the first part of HE to a close (and found me putting the cards aside and reading the story bit in the rulebook first, I noticed). I am very pleased with HE as a set so far; I do believe it is the best expansion of L5R to come out. The art is superior, and the cards are opening up many new strategies for the game. On the downside, though, if HE4-6 is as awful to buy as HE1-3 was, I just will not buy it.

  La Wanted Akuma!
Dave Williams mentions the length David La was willing to go to have Oni no Akuma corrupt the Lion Clan:

"A perfect example of this is the Gencon winner, David La (*not* Lau). David wanted to corrupt the Lion Clan, so he built a shadowlands Lion deck, and made sure that Oni no Akuma was in play for nearly every single one of his victories. He even went so far as to not win a semi-final game that he could have ended in order to wait until Akuma was in play. Net-result: Kitsu Okura wins the Emerald Championship with the aid of Akuma, and the Lion look REALLY bad."
8:56 PM EDT, I.Andy

  L5R at DragonCon
DragonCon is Septemeber 3-6 in Atlanta. You can find the schedule for gaming events here, rather than the main site. There is scheduled a sealed deck tournament on Thursday, and qualifiers for the Story tournament will be on Saturday with the finals on Sunday. The clan of the winner will receive a Dragon clan artifact (in real life, a Naginata; it sounds like this is the story line prize as well). Here's the description

Gift of the Dragon's Claw-the Age of Myth is over, and the Dragons are returning to their centuries-old contemplation. Before they leave, however, they opened the way for a gift of epic proportion: a naginata, it's shining blade carved from the claw of the Immortal Dragons, that their souls would not forever leave the Empire. Who has found this gift, and to whom was it given?

I don't know how accurate this information is, please make sure and double check through official channels. I'll see you there!

  Zen's GenCon Report
Zen has posted some early GenCon info here. He describes the final match with some new info, and thankfully appears to have authoritatively corrected me on the Winner's name: David La! Go Matsu Akuma!

"Ree Soesbee then briefly described a battle between Iuchi Karasu and Kitsu Okura. The battle was almost finished, and Karasu said he had nothing to fear. Okura replied, 'You are wrong. You have everything to be afraid of.' Okura reached down to the ground, and Oni no Akuma rose from the earth..." -Zen Faulkes

That's the way, Okura! Revel in your open corruption! Perhaps you can redeem yourself in our Emperor's eyes for your failing at the Day of Thunder! ;)

  Description of GenCon Final
<Zakyn> Isawa: shadow lion won... last turn brought out Akuma on his 2nd last province with a farmlands region.. and defended with it against 3 corn guys (2 sanetama and 1 katta) sanetama had shinjo ancester and 2 followers (medium cav and mounted spearman..) David La (deadly ground and) corn guy conceded
<Zakyn> ...though it was basically corn going down very low in honor (like -6 or sunmmthing) and was pitching everything he saw.. and trying to attack as fast as possible
<Zakyn> ...At the crucial point in game... corn had a sanetama (with shinjo ancestor) and a fan of command + medium cav.. and had curshed 2 provinces... though it was down to 3 itself by lion's attacck...
<Zakyn> lion's turn (had "rent-a monk" [IA: Ikudaiu]) in province 1 and province 2.. was "akuma" on a farmlands region
<Zakyn> Lion had out 2 ryozos (or some other guy) and decided to attack (had no rallying cry) he attack .. took a province...(corn down to 2 too)
<Zakyn> only unbowed personalities for lion was kitsu watever (shugenja and bookie [IA: Ikoma Kaoku]) with a total of 4 force (either farmlands tokens or bookie bonus) he deiced to go for the gusto and pop his 2nd last province with Akuma
<Zakyn> anyway.. Corn was down to neggative honor and had out 2 Merchant caravans and SH as main gold producers... (he had been using his "dojied corrupt stables" and thus could only bring out 2 sanetamas and katta"
<Zakyn> ...10 F defending... 4 F with 2 lion guys.. brought out akuma
<Zakyn> Corn had 10 f too... and attacked last province.... Lion player Deadly ground... and Chris joilet conceded with no sup Tac in hand
<Zakyn> Sanetama (with shinjo ancestor) had mounted spearman and medium cav... + 1 other sanetama and katta attaccking...
<Zakyn> ah... now I remeber.. ikudaiu came out. too
<Zakyn> it was bookie, ikudaiu... kistu something and akuma who defended the last province...
<Zakyn> It was really a gusto thing... both players were playing corrupted
<Zakyn> another tibit was that both finalists were wearing "Junzo" caps...
<Zakyn> ...Ikoma: 1st day I think it was abt 140-160 ppl.. 2nd day was 170+
<Zakyn> ...Ikoma: a lot of Clan wars were sold...

  GenCon Updates
Here's some more GenCon info from Dragnbane (thank a BUNCH, DB!):

<Dragnbane> entering the finals from friday was 4 Dragon, 3 Crane, 2 Lion, 2 Unicorn, 1 Junzo, 1 Crab, 1 Toturi's Army, 1 Scorpion, and 1 Naga.
<Dragnbane> In the first round games, my unicorn met up with another unicorn, and we charged valiantly across the field of battle, met in the middle... and decided to go to lunch. (I conceded to him, he bought me dinner.) :)
<Dragnbane> the sad thing is, I realized somewhere around game 5 that if I hadn't done that, there might be 3 unicorns inthe finals. :) I ended up with a no-show bye second round, went 4-2, and still accumulated more points than most of the 16 people going on to the finals who won 5 games. :)
<Dragnbane> Dragons: Sean Silva, Don Gates, Chris Bergstrom, and Scott Parish
<Dragnbane> Crane: John Laenzsan, Terry Madden, Garret Rushton
<Dragnbane> Unicorn: Don Schaman, Chris Silot
<Dragnbane> (hehe... Chris Silot is the fellow I conceded to first round) ;)
<Dragnbane> Lion: David La, Steve Milobar
<Dragnbane> Junzo: David Salsman
<Dragnbane> Crab: Paul Heaver
<Dragnbane> Toturi: Danny Spurr
<Dragnbane> Scorpion: Brad Matteson
<Dragnbane> Naga: Marty Loftus (GO CHICAGO!) ...he drove up with me. :)
<Dragnbane> marty = NxtQamar
<Dragnbane> ...it may come true. :)
<Dragnbane> his naga deck was undefeated. :)

  GenCon #l5r Tournament
The IRC #l5r was played yesterday, and Noel "KitsuSkya" Meyer took first place with her Lion Honor/Tactition deck (that will apparently be reproduced in WotL). Here's a play-by-play, the Unicorn was Ram-Man, and I'm not sure who Crab was:

<Dragnbane> noel says "it was the fastest multi she ever saw, crab attacked noel second turn with berg allying with an agetoki and a gohei taking a province, crab berserked his unit she sent it home, and got ring of earth
<Dragnbane> after that, berg got a couple really big people, he got out tsuko overlaid by turn 3 or 4, they all decided berg had to die cause he was attacking everyone. :)
<Dragnbane> berg knocked the crab two provinces, basically taking him out, and skya decimated the unicorn cause he got a much worse draw than she did. ;)

  Rokugan Mush Information
Here's some more information about the Rokugan MUSH:

The most important thing about RokuganMUSH is that it's different. It shouldn't be confused with the vast majority of text-based games on the internet, which generally revolve around lots of number-generating and hacking and slashing. We're striving to create an environment where stories can be told between people who enjoy the game and the setting. Play on RokuganMUSH is about interaction between characters and telling stories, and the mechanics of the RPG are there as a last resort, to be used for conflict resolution, etc. Requirements for joining the game will be that one can spell properly and are willing to play in a mature setting - telling a good story matters more than winning.

This isn't meant to scare off players, but rather we shouldn't lead people to expect one thing rather than another from the MUSH. If you've got questions, please eye the web page or email Shahadet, AKA mitch@byte-me.org.

  Let's Start a Clan War!
I'm a playtester for Clan War. I just got the final rules, and they look good. Ken Carpenter, the lead designer, has given me permission to give the stats of two of my favorite Lions from the playtest Lion Army Book. I can't discuss them in detail, but I did throw in some notes to give you an idea of their abilities:
Ikoma Ujiaki
Air: 5, Earth: 4, Fire: 2, Water: 2, Void: 3
TN: 8 [To be hit], Wounds: 7, ATT: +2 [Attacking bonus], DAM: +3 [Damage bonus], #S: 2 [Number of Strikes]
Skills: Battle 5, Leadership 3 [May lead up to 30 troops], Charge [Bonus when Charging], Go Master [Offense Bonus], Tactician [Extra Tactical Card], Iaijutsu 2
Special: Unique, Equipment: Katana, Light Armor
Profession:Lion Samurai, Glory: 8, Honor: 4
Ikoma Ryozo
Air: 3, Earth: 3, Fire: 4, Water: 5, Void: 3
TN: 7, Wounds: 3, ATT: +1, DAM: +3, #S: 2
Skills: Battle 2, Leadership 2, Fearless, Frenzy, Charge
Special: Ryozo may not challenge a personality with a higher Glory or Honor. Ryozo will never refuse a challenge.
Equipment: Katana, Light Armor
Profession:Lion Samurai, Glory: 4, Honor: 3

The Crab Army Boxed set and, presumably, the Army book are currently scheduled for November, and Lion for December.

What's the Difference Between LBS and L5R?
I thought people might like a little scoop on how LBS and L5R compare. I haven't played yet, but here is what I've seen from reading the rules and watching a few games on IRC. The similarities:
  • The cards are, for the most part, very similar, with personalities, followers, items, etc... They operate similarly, but without the aspect of honor.
  • The card layout is similar. You have four City Sections (like provinces) you have to protect.
  • Instead of Rings you have Story Cards. There can be many story cards, but they are like Rings: you must perform some feat to play them, then they give you a benefit.
That's about it, as far as similarities go. Now the differences:
  • There is one deck, and all cards are played out of your hand, not your city sections. All cards have fate values.
  • Play alternates between players like Doomtown.
  • You win when you A.) Destroy all your opponent's city sections. B.) Play 5 points of stories. Each Story has a variable point value. C.) Run your opponents out of water.
  • There are two costs to most cards: copper (gold) and water.
  • Water is not easily produced. You start with water based on your choice of city sections.
  • There are two battle segments: Day Attacks, which is attacking your opponents' city walls to destroy them and the water they contain, and Night Raids, in which you steal your opponents water for yourself.
  • In Day Attacks, there is not a Winner/Loser like in L5R. A person bows to engage for his Strength [Force] as a battle action. The opponent must absorb the damage by destroying cards, water, or City Sections.
  • Duels are done with thrust/parry plays. I thrust a card face down. You parry with a card. If you do not parry exactly the same fate value as I thrusted, you take the difference in Ka [Chi] damage. If you survived, it's your turn to thrust. Continue until dead. Ka is restored after the duel.
Here's the lowdown on the three main factions so far:
The Moto Oasis: The Moto Raiders are descendants of the Ki-Rin clan who have all but forgotten their origins. They are nomadic raiders (like Mongols, apparently).
The Hidden Keep of the Assassins: The former rulers of the Jewel of the Desert, the men of their family have been cursed in some way, and now the women run the show.
The Empire of the Senpet: The Egyptian-like people whose land is being reclaimed by the desert, and must take the Jewel of the Desert to survive. It is the Senpet who encountered the Scorpions in the desert, and believing that Kachiko was their god Selqet, the Scorpion goddess of magic and apparently a key part of their doomsday prophecies, they defeated the Scorpion clan and took Kachiko as a concubine in a harem.
