Subject: Rules Question: Elite Troops [ZEN]

> Do Elite Spearmen and Elite Pikemen still provide force to the army
> if their personality is bowed? Are they also immune to fear effects?

   No. No.

Matthew Budd, playing Crab: top 4 in Australian Kotei. He very well
could have made the finals.

No Crane / Phoenix comparisons were being made. The contention was
only that decks with Shinsei's Shrine did, and still do, win (or finish
in the finals) of large, competitive tournaments -- which the Australian
Kotei was.

Then you'd better get used to cloven hooves.

The "most recent printing" rule has been part of L5R since Emerald
Edition. It's a little late to demonize it.

Yes. Hida Tampako, too. So sayeth Andy Heckt. This is a REVERSAL of
an earlier post from Andy.

I commend your consideration of your roommate. Nevertheless, I would
ask folks to wait for a chance to look at the cards / rules / FAQ / etc.
before posting questions, please.

Australian Kotei: 34 players. Six rounds of Swiss, 8 player finals (3
games). Orion III: 80+ players. Five rounds of Swiss, 16 player finals
(4 games). The winners of both tournaments played *exactly* the same
number of games.

It's also intriguing that the *biggest* L5R tournaments of the last
two years (GenCon) were won by clans that were not favoured to win at
the time (Crane at GenCon 98, Phoenix or Toturi's Army at GenCon '99).

> Is the Tomb of Iuchiban [missing the Shadowlands trait]??

   Correct as printed.

[Q: Can the +1F/+1C on a personality entering play from Plains Above
Evil be increased by Shiryo no Tetsuya?]

> But the Personality in question would essentially have +2/+2?

No. +1F/+1C from the Plains. +1C from the Monk ancestor. Shiryo no
Tetsuya would *NOT* increase the bonus from the region.

Subject: Shield Wall (Attn. Zen)

> How does Shield Wall interact with cards such as Kyujutsu and Arrows
> from the Ranks?

Kyujutsu beats the Shield Wall. Shield Wall prevents Arrows from the
Ranks.

> Does Arrows from the Ranks acutally "target" since there are no
> alternatives?

Yes. Arrows from the Ranks says, "...targeting the challenging
Personality...".

> Regarding the Temples of the Crow, if one activates the ability, and

> working?

   The sensei's effect continues.

> If not, can you use Forgotten Lesson and Amnesia to get around it?

   Yes.

> how many times may a player react to one action[?]

Until you run out; i.e., as many times as you have different actions
printed on different cards.

Subject: Re: Doom of the Alliance

> If I use Doom of the Alliance against a Fox Clan player; does that

> are their personalities reduced by 5 for being a fox card?

"Yoritomo's Alliance players must pay full cost for Personalities
with the Yoritomo's Alliance trait..." Doom of the Alliance thus negates
Kyuden Kitsune's "extra" 2G discount for Fox clan personalities; you
must always pay printed gold cost.

;;;;;

The Shinsei's Shrines debate has been interesting in many respects.
I'd just like to point out to all those people who are asking for errata
/ changes to Finding the Harmony, Rise from the Ashes, etc., that the
Shinsei's Shrine thread is a great example of why you *don't* want to
rush about making changes to cards. Problems often go away on their own.

I can see it now. Next year, when Dave Williams asks, "What should we
do about Finding the Harmony / Rise From the Ashes in Silver Edition?",
there will be impassioned defenses about how the cards "aren't a
problem," "aren't really all that good," "have so many things you can do
against them," and "this deck type doesn't deserve to be crippled" and
so should stay as they are... ;)
