All one action.

Right.

Seppun Sensei beats Deeds, Not Words.
For something to beat Seppun Sensei, it must (A) be in effect
*before* any honor is up for grabs, and (B) use a phrase like "cannot
gain honor," "no player may gain honor," etc.
For example, In Time of War falls only into category (a). It says it
"negates" excess honor gains; that's a change. Seppun Sensei players get
full honor. Scorn falls only into category (b). It says "cannot gain
honor," but it doesn't take effect before the action is played. Again,
Seppun Sensei players get full honor.

Hence my choice of verb, "appear," indicating uncertainty.
When in doubt, quote the FAQ:
"Q: There are so many cards now that let someone act before the Defender
in a battle... How do I tell which one goes first?
"A: For simplicity, these have all been ruled to work at the same speed,
no matter whether they say "before the Defender's first action", "before
any other actions", "immediately after the start of a battle", or
whatever. The first chance to use one of these goes to the player whose
turn it is, then it proceeds normally around the table in turn order."
So, yeah, I was wrong. Nothing new there. ;)

Too bad. "The player whose card has the lowest / highest focus..."
There is still a player with a high and low focus value, so there is
still a 'prize.'

Makoto is worded differently. It specifically refers to the
difference of two bowed personalities.

If you consider my posts official, then that's officially how Makoto
works until Jeff or Dave says otherwise.

Work with me here.
The point is that the "prevent" action (the Favor, in this case), is
*after* an honor-related action. The things that beat Seppun Sensei all
come *before* any such honor-related action.

Subject: Re: turning off MIME format - for Zen's sake!
> MIME is bad only if you use AOL or a MAC.
I use neither. I tried getting the digest in MIME (which is an
option, and which my mailreader can read), but I went back to plain text
for a couple reasons.
A. It's easier for me to cut and paste posts so I can answer rules
questions quickly and with a minimum of text repetition.
B. Some people post in fonts that are very difficult to read,
depending on intangibles like how big your screen is, what fonts you
have on your computer, and so on.
I'm sorry to be carping about it, but with the size of this
list, you can't assume that everyone is up to your speed.

Only a very, very small number of events use the phrase "in play"
(e.g., Monsoon). The rest (not using the phrase "enter play" or "in
play" or what have you) never enter play. They are discarded, but have
continuing effects.

I can't find the most recent text for Evil Portents, so I can't
answer.

Once. But if it gives a +X Chi bonus, it obviously raises the
personality's chi as well.
