My Dear Honorable Doshi,

Ohayo-gozaimashita!

>I've always been under the impression that the spells the shugenja learn are
written and kept >in clan-specific ciphers that only shugenja from that
clan's shugenja school are taught.

That would be an extremely correct assumption.

>If this is so, where do ronin shugenja get their spells from?

This would be one of the difficulties of being a Ronin. First, if
the Ronin was previously from a clan, depending upon the circumstances of his
losing his/her name, you could role-play it that their sensei took pity on
them and decided to teach them new spells anyway. They could also steal the
scrolls from shugenja of their former clan.
Second, if they happen to be a true ronin, then it becomes more
difficult. They would still had to have had a teacher teach them to harness
the energy, and read the kanji of one of the clans (where the sensei learned
it from). Depending on how much the sensei knows, the True Ronin shugenja
may be on their own for learning anything new.

I quote the Game Master's Survival Guide, "The path of the ronin is
not an easy one. The entire world stomps in your face, even when they don't
mean to. Peasants have no time for you. Samurai laugh at you. You're on
your own, with nobody to help you out. Congratulations, you're a loner.
Hope you got what you asked for."

	That's my two koku!

Sayonara,

Otaku Masero
Unicorn Clan Stable Master
