Hey Folks,
With all this HB stuff going on, I've had lots reminders about the
difference between L5R players and the players of other TCGs. In addition,
the retailers who support L5R have shown to be incredibly trustworthy and
excited about L5R.
For example, 2 weeks ago, I attended a distributor open house (Alliance).
I had some very early HB product to show around (this product was fine, we
hadn't found the problems yet). Since I had a display, I told interested
retailers if they wanted to, I'd run a Pre Pre-release for them that night.
Now that night, there was two parties planned, so I was up against stiff
competition. When the time came, 22 retailers showed up! Unfortunately, I
didn't have enough HB decks, so 10 players had to use Pearl Decks.
I told them that I was doing this on a trust basis. I was trusting them
not to show the cards to anyone when they left, or talk about the event to
anyone as I didn't want to ruin the players excitement when they got cards.
Each retailer got 2 boosters and a starter. We played until well into the
night. The top finishers got extra HB boosters. Everyone went home with
their cards. Not a single retailer out of 22 leaked a peep. Not one card
showed up on this list from those retailers. I can't imagine any other game
inspiring that kind of loyalty out of their retailers. I want to take this
time to thank those people for keeping their promises to me and not leaking
information - and to tell them that I will try to run events like that at
every Alliance open house I can (right up until the point someone leaks,
then all bets are off - but I don't have any reason to think that leaks are
likely).
The players of L5R are also a different breed. While this list often gets
pretty hot about whatever the current topic is, there are a few
undercurrents that are always here. You all are always helpful to new
players. You all seem to care about the game - not just about winning, but
about the integrity of the game. Many of you have a loyalty to the game that
keeps new players coming in all the time, and keeps the grass roots support
at a very high level. Heck, for some of you, the story is so important that
you actually bribe other players to represent you clan at events (go
Scorpions!).
Thinking like this reminds me of the awesome responsibility of running
this brand. Printer errors like HB, put that responsibility to the test. I
hope you all feel that we care as much about the product as you do (coming
from a guy who right now is wearing a Pearl Pre-release T-shirt, has
hundreds of L5R cards on his desk trying to make a good deck for Midnight
Madness, while looking at his color print out of the L5R Pikachu that's up
on Ikoma Andy's site.) I also hope you all see with our response that we are
going out of our way to try to treat the brand, it's players, and our
retailers with respect as well.
Thanks for the support folks,
Luke Peterschmidt
