1) I'm the messenger. I am passing along details as accurately as I can.

2) I think the Ninja Scroll thing falls under the Homage vs. Stupid effect
described earlier. Think about it this way: Being a [ethnic], I can sit
around and tell [ethnic] jokes all day. But if someone from a different
continent does it, suddenly it becomes racist.

In a similar way, it may well be (note: MAY well be) that those who live in
Japan can make up "historical fantasy," but us gaijin "don't have a clue and
are showing our stupidity." But I'd be willing to wager that the time period
of armor, etc., in Ninja Scorll is internally consistent.
